1 July - Rust & mite checks

Chrysanthemum rust - Check for white, cream, brown or pink pustules on leaf undersides along with yellow blotching on top surfaces. Keep leaves dry and apply Amistar (EAMUs required) or Bumper 250EC (EAMUs required) if seen. Protect plants using Karamate Dry Flo Neotec.

Red bud mite - Ensure ties are tight during tree budding to prevent mites entering behind buds.

Root rots - Control Pythium and Phytophthora spp. with drenches of Fenomenal, Prestop (EAMU 2015-2773), Previcur Energy (EAMU 2011-1557), Proplant (EAMUs required) or Subdue.

Slugworms - Feeding from larval stages of sawfly skeletonises Prunus and Tilia leaves. Control using Decis, Gazelle SG, Hallmark WZT (EAMU 2008-2944), Pyrethrum 5EC, Spruzit or Toppel 100 (EAMU 2015-1454).

Aphids - Use predators alongside Aphox, Chess WG (EAMUs required), Eradicoat, Mainman (EAMU 2013-0045), Naturalis-L, Pyrethrum 5EC, SB Plant Invigorator or Spruzit. Non-IPM products include Actara (EAMU 2014-0186), Biscaya or Calypso (both require EAMUs); Decis (EAMU 2014-1011), Gazelle SG, Hallmark WZT (EAMU 2008-2944), Movento (EAMU 2011-1987), Sumi-Alpha or Toppel 100.

Flea beetles - Apply Chess WG (EAMU 2013-2016), Calypso (EAMUs required), Decis (non-IPM, EAMU 2014-1011), Majestik, SB Plant Invigorator, Hallmark WZT (non-IPM, EAMU 2008-2944), Pyrethrum 5EC or Spruzit to Crambe, fuchsia, wallflowers and others. Weed hosts are willowherb and bittercress.

Hellebores - Apply Cercobin WG (EAMUs and restrictions apply), Octave, Signum (EAMU 2012-2141) or Switch to control leaf spotting caused by Coniothyrium hellebori.

Leaf miner - Maintain preventive sprays on young Aesculus spp. using Gazelle SG, dimethoate or Hallmark WZT (EAMU 2008-2944). Pests attack white varieties more than reds.

Pest control - Maintain aphid, mite, thrips and whitefly controls as temperatures remain high even on dull days. Populations have a quick turnaround from egg or live young to adult and can undo even tight monitoring programmes. As products will not always control all life stages of certain pests, good monitoring allows more effective spray and predator controls.

Eelworm - Avoid taking cuttings from Anemone, Astrantia, Bergenia, Brunnera, Buddleja, Cistus, Helenium, Heuchera, Penstemon, Philadelphus, Phlox, Pulmonaria, Tiarella, Tradescantia and Weigela showing angular patches on lower leaves. Vydate 10G (EAMU 2014-1636) or Movento (EAMU 2011-1987) will help reduce pest levels.
