12 May - Predators & aphids

Predators - Use an integrated approach to control pests, diseases and weeds. For pests on protected crops, use products with short persistence such as Aphox, Majestik, SB Plant Invigorator, Spruzit or Pyrethrum 5EC before introducing predators.

Leaf-curling aphids - Control on ornamental cherries and other plants such as Viburnum carcephalum with Calypso (EAMUs required), Chess WG (EAMUs required), Gazelle SG or Movento (EAMU 2011-1987), which will all provide good control even after pests have distorted foliage.

Willow anthracnose - Apply Amistar (EAMU 2009-0443), Folicur, Signum (EAMU 2012-2141) and Switch through the spring and summer to prevent stem dieback as well as large unsightly cankers.

Western flower thrips - Control scratching and flecking damage on foliage and flowers with Conserve, Dynamec or Naturalis-L. Use predators including Amblyseius andersoni, A. cucumeris, A. montdorensis and A. swirskii mites or Orius spp. on foliage and Macrocheles robustulus mites on soil or growing-media surfaces to control the pupa stage. For additional control, choose Gaeolaelaps aculeifer or Stratiolaelaps scimitus (formerly Hypoaspis miles). Steinernema feltiae parasitic nematodes can be applied to foliage, soils and growing media depending on the pest life stage. Control products include Actara (EAMU 2014-0186), Calypso (EAMUs required), Conserve, Decis (EAMU 2014-1011), Dynamec, Hallmark WZT (EAMU 2008-2944), Majestik, Naturalis-L, Pyrethrum 5EC, SB Plant Invigorator, Spruzit or Toppel 100 depending on crop location and use of predators.

Caterpillars - Install pheromone lures inside Delta traps over vulnerable protected crops to identify damaging species. This helps with tortrix moths and timely insecticide applications. Control pests on outdoor Betula, Cratageus and Carpinus using Decis, Dimilin Flo, Insegar WG, Runner (EAMU 2012-0448), Steward (EAMU 2008-2905), Toppel 100 or Tracer (EAMU 2008-2908).

Thielaviopsis (black root rot) - Check for patchy black damage on roots as well as black lesions at the base of stems alongside leaf yellowing. Drench with Cercobin WG (EAMUs required) or Octave, or apply a directed spray of Switch where there are active infections. Use Prestop (EAMUs required), Trianum P or Serenade ASO (EAMUs required) drenches on vulnerable crops. All applications should be within crops' irrigation regimes to avoid long periods of wet compost.
