13 June: Mealybug & leaf spot

John Adlam looks at control options for mealybug, leaf spots, pine shoot moth, whitefly and more - and advises on irrigation.

Mealybug Control using predators including Cryptolaemus montrouzieri along with Leptomastix dactylopii (for citrus mealybug) and L. epona for vine mealybug. Anagyrus pseudococci will control citrus mealybug but will also attack vine mealybug. Control products include Decis (non-IPM, EAMU 2014-1011), Movento (EAMU 2011-1987), Pyrethrum 5EC, SB Plant Invigorator or Spruzit.

Leaf spots Maintain controls on astrantia, hellebores, pansies, phormium, roses and yucca. Products include Amistar (EAMUs required), Bravo 500 (EAMU 2011-1130), Rovral WG (EAMU 2011-3200), Octave, Serenade ASO (EAMUs required), Signum (EAMU 2012-2141)
and Switch.

Pine shoot moth Decis (EAMU 2014-1011) or Toppel 100 will help to disrupt egg-laying and larvae hatching.

Whitefly Control on ornamental crops using Chess WG (EAMUs required), Eradicoat, Mainman (EAMU 2013-0045), Majestik, Mycotal, Movento (EAMU 2011-1987), Naturalis-L or SB Plant Invigorator. For non-IPM situations, use Decis (EAMU 2014-1011), Gazelle SG, Hallmark WZT (EAMU 2008-2944), Pyrethrum 5EC, Spruzit or Toppel 100.

Lavenders Maintain shab and Botrytis controls, particularly in damp or humid conditions, with Octave, Serenade ASO (EAMUs required), Signum (EAMU 2012-2141) or Switch. Ensure good airflow around crops.

Aphids Increase Aphidius spp. on protected crops alongside selective insecticides such as Aphox (until 31 July 2017), Chess WG (EAMU 2013-2016), Majestik and SB Plant Invigorator. Large pest populations will require a spray before predator levels are increased.

Revocations Aphox has an end-use date of 31 July 2017. The new Toppel 100 product (MAPP 17071) only has an on-label approval for its use on outdoor ornamentals. Systhane 20EW (MAPP 09396 and MAPP 16837) has an end use date of 30 September 2017.

Powdery mildew Control using Amistar (EAMUs required), AQ10 (EAMU 2012-1324), Bumper 250EC (EAMU 2009-0707), Corbel, Cyflamid (EAMU 2007-0512), Folicur, Kindred, food-grade potassium bicarbonate, Nimrod, Signum (EAMU 2012-2141), Stroby WG, Systhane 20 EW or Takumi SC (EAMU 2013-1294).

Watering Check irrigation programmes daily to avoid wet compost. Boost root production on poorly established plants by using liquid feeds high in phosphate such as ICL’s Plant Starter, Solufeed 1:5:1, Universol Yellow or Hortimix 1:4:1. Use overhead irrigation later in the day to wash through salts that can build up on plants grown on sand beds.
