22 July - Rots and camellias

Root rots Control Pythium and Phytophthora spp. infections with drenches of Fenomenal, Prestop (EAMU 2015-2773), Previcur Energy (EAMU 2011-1557), Proplant (EAMU 2012-3100) or Subdue.

Camellias Apply Cycocel to camellias for sale next spring at 3,000ppm. Continue with liquid feeding for this month only.

Top dressing Check nutrient status of older crops and top dress with Floranid Permanent, HortiTop, Sincron or Osmocote Topdress where required.

Iris Control iris corm borers, which cause Erwinia soft rot, using Calypso (EAMUs required), Decis or Gazelle SG.

Chrysanthemum white rust Check for white, cream, brown or pink pustules on leaf undersides along with yellow blotching on top surfaces. Keep leaves dry and apply Amistar (EAMU 2009-0443) or Bumper 250EC (EAMUs required) if seen. Protect plants using Karamate Dry Flo Neotec.

Wilt diseases Check aster, dianthus, hebe, penstemon and phlox especially under glass and polythene. Control using Amistar (EAMU 2009-0443), Octave, Signum (EAMU 2012-2141), Switch or T34 Biocontrol (EAMU 2012-1118).

Fruit Remove all the fruit from fruit trees before despatch if a "non-edible" spray programme has been used this season.

Pest control Maintain aphid, mite, thrips and whitefly controls as temperatures remain high even on dull days. Populations will have a quick turnaround from egg or live young to adult.

Mealy bug Check euonymus, phormiums and other plants. Control with Calypso (EAMUs required), Chess WG (EAMU 2013-2016), Decis, Gazelle SG or Hallmark WZT (EAMU 2008-2944) depending on their location and use of predators.

Powdery mildew Control using Amistar (EAMU 2009-0443), AQ10 (EAMUs required), Bumper 250EC (EAMU 2014-1274), Corbel (not on roses), Cyflamid (EAMU 2007-0512), Folicur, Kindred, food-grade potassium bicarbonate, Nimrod, Signum (EAMU 2012-2141), Stroby WG, Systhane 20 EW or Takumi SC (EAMU 2013-1294).

Slugworms Feeding from larval stages of sawfly skeletonises Prunus and Tilia leaves. Control using Decis, Gazelle SG, Hallmark WZT (EAMU 2008-2944), Pyrethrum 5EC, Spruzit or Toppel 100 (EAMU 2015-1454).

Shot hole In wet weather, or with overhead irrigation, apply tank mix of Cuprokylt (EAMU 2015-1176), Serenade ASO (EAMUs required) and a wetting agent to control bacterial infections on ornamental Prunus, Philadephus and magnolia.
