24 June - Infections and mites

Bacterial infections Maintain Cuprokylt (outdoor crops only, EAMU 2015-1176) and Serenade ASO (EAMUs required) sprays on Prunus spp.

Tarsonemid mites Apply Apollo 50SC (EAMU 2014-1271), Dynamec, Envidor (outdoor use only, EAMU 2016-0997) or Oberon (EAMU 2004-1718). Use biological control agents under protection such as Amblyseius cucumeris, A. andersoni and A. californicus. Check compatibility with listed insecticides.

Ribes blister aphid Pest feeding causes leaf distortion, blistering and discolouration of foliage - red or sometimes yellow. Control further damage using Decis (EAMU 2014-1011), Hallmark WZT (EAMU 2008-2944), Spruzit or Pyrethrum 5EC.

Downy mildew Continue controls on Buddleja, Digitalis, Hebe, pansies and roses. Use Amistar (EAMU 2009-0443), Fubol Gold WG (EAMU 2012-0217), Invader (EAMU 2012-0109), Paraat (EAMU 2011-2585), Signum (EAMU 2012-2141), Subdue or Valbon (EAMUs required).

Predators Increase predator numbers week on week. Switch to more heat-tolerant species such as Amblyseius andersoni or A. californicus for spider mite control.

Ash leaf sucker Prevalent this month, causing leaf-edge curling and purple discolouration. Apply Decis or Hallmark WZT (EAMU 2008-2944) if required.

Guttation Improving airflow on protected Buddleja, Digitalis and Phygelius will reduce the risk of black spots on leaves and stems.

Pine shoot moth Decis or Toppel 100 (EAMU 2015-1454) will help disrupt egg-laying and hatching.

Leaf spots Maintain controls on Astrantia, hellebores, pansies, Phormium, roses and yucca. Products include Amistar (EAMU 2009-0443), Bravo 500 (EAMU 2011-1130), Rovral WG (EAMU 2011-3200), Octave, Serenade ASO (EAMUs required), Signum (EAMU 2012-2141) and Switch.

Whitefly Control on ornamental crops using Chess WG (EAMU 2013-2016), Eradicoat, Mainman (EAMU 2013-0045), Majestik, Mycotal, Movento (EAMU 2011-1987), Naturalis-L, Oberon (EAMU 2004-1718), Savona or SB Plant Invigorator. For non-IPM situations, use Decis (EAMU 2014-1011), Gazelle SG, Hallmark WZT (EAMU 2008-2944), Pyrethrum 5EC, Spruzit or Toppel 100 (EAMU 2015-1454).

Escallonias Avoid yellowing and defoliation of lower leaves with foliar sprays of Epsom salts - 15g per litre of water - to run-off.

Irrigation Regularly check crops along bed edges and pathways - do not assume automatic irrigation systems produce even output at the right intervals.
