28 April - Aphids & infections

Aphids - With pest numbers building, particularly on protected crops, control them using predators alongside Aphox, Chess WG (EAMUs required), Majestik, Naturalis-L, Pyrethrum 5EC, Savona or SB Plant Invigorator.

Bacterial infections - Avoid late-afternoon overhead irrigation on vulnerable Prunus spp. so foliage is not left wet for long periods.

Toppel 100 - Note that EAMU 2015-1454 associated with MAPP 15696 loses its approval at the end of this month. The replacement MAPP 17071 currently has an on-label approval for use on outdoor ornamentals with no EAMU for protected crops.

Downy mildew - Humid conditions will encourage this disease on a range of crops. Control using Amistar (EAMU 2009-0443), Fenomenal (EAMU 2013-1990), Fubol Gold WG (EAMU 2013-2288), Invader (EAMU 2012-0109), Paraat (EAMU 2011-2585), Pergado Uni (EAMU 2012-1605), Signum (EAMU 2012-2141) or Valbon (EAMU 2014-2325). Some products have similar active ingredients so take care with spray programmes. Protect crops using Bravo 500 (EAMU 2011-1130), Dithane 945 (EAMUs required), Karamate Dry Flo Neotec, Pergado Uni (EAMU 2012-1605) or Proplant (EAMUs required) on buddleia, Cirsium, digitalis, geum, hebe, impatiens, osteospermum, pansy, rose and others.

Flea beetles - Control damage on Crambe, fuchsia, wallflowers and others using Chess WG (EAMUs required), Calypso (EAMUs required), Decis (non-IPM, EAMU 2014-1011), Majestik, SB Plant Invigorator, Hallmark WZT (non-IPM, EAMU 2008-2944), Pyrethrum 5EC or Spruzit.

Bark beetles - Apply Decis, Hallmark WZT (EAMU 2008-2944) or Toppel 100 (EAMU 2015-1454) directly onto stems of pines, cherries and other vulnerable crops to control emerging pests.

Tarsonemid mites - Apply Apollo 50SC (EAMU 2014-1271), Dynamec, Envidor (EAMU 2012-0254) or Oberon (EAMU 2004-1718). Use biological control agents such as Amblyseius cucumeris, A. andersoni and A. californicus, checking their compatibility with products.

Vine weevil - Check vulnerable crops and any trap plants thoroughly now for signs of larvae. Apply nematodes when soil and compost temperatures are consistently above 5 degsC.

Whitefly - Introduce Encarsia and Eretmocerus when "scale" stage is present. Apply Chess WG (EAMU 2013-2016), Majestik, Mainman (EAMU 2013-0045), Naturalis-L, Pyrethrum 5EC, Savona and SB Plant Invigorator. For non-IPM systems, include Decis (EAMU 2014-1011), Gazelle SG, Spruzit or Toppel 100 (EAMU 2015-1454).
