The hardy hibiscus with huge flowers up to 18cm across - BIG HibisKISS from Diderk Heinje - took the award for Best Nursery Stock Introduction at the Four Oaks Trade Show Awards.
The hibiscus is the same variety as Hibiscus Walberton's Rose Moon, available through Farplants, and bred by David Tristram of Walberton Plants. This variety won the Best Novel Plant award at the Groen Direkt show recently. It is represented by Plants For Europe. Heinje developed the branding for use in Europe.
Plants for Europe owner Graham Spencer said he was delighted with the awards, which had generated great interest in the plant: "We're very pleased with the demand created but we can't keep up with demand. We wish we had more plants. We could sell double the number. At Groen Direkt two weeks ago we fielded serious enquiries from growers who want to sell it in the UK and on the continent. We can't supply more thna we've got agreements with."
Dutch, German, French and Poles are growing it, with Farplants having the exclusive in the UK. There are "low tens of thousands" available for 2018 and in 2019 that will go up into "higher tens of thousands".
